We know that modeling safe infant sleep in the hospital and providing education to families has a significant effect on infant mortality. Ensuring hospital professionals are knowledgeable about safe infant sleep recommendations and how to share these recommendations is critical. Safe Sleep NC is committed to supporting NC hospitals to provide parents and caregivers with the evidence-based information they need to ensure their babies sleep safely from day one.
We have started a Hospital Safe Sleep Working Group to learn from other NC hospital professionals and to develop shared resources. This working group has contributed to the creation of the Safe Sleep NC Hospital Toolkit.
The toolkit is a compendium of safe sleep QI resources for NC hospitals. It was developed by reviewing current educational and implementation resources and meeting with NC hospital providers/staff, including the NC Safe Sleep Hospital Working Group. The toolkit includes (1) infant sleep-related death data, (2) evidence-based recommendations (including NICU), (3) training/education information for providers and parents/caregivers, and (4) guidance for implementation.
